PRECISION CUT Vs COMMERCIAL CUT
Often it is thought that colour matters most in a sapphire, while the quality of cut is the least important element, when in fact, a high-quality precision cut can influence the colour and brilliance of a finished sapphire!
The precision cut Sapphires here at The House of Facets, differ significantly to commercial cut sapphires. Our ethically hand mined Australian sapphires are cared for with the utmost importance when transformed from a rough stone (how it came out of the ground) to a cut faceted sapphire (what you see in jewellery).
Brianna gives strict attention to use the right angles when faceting resulting in the perfect refractive index to have the best possible colour, shape and brilliance from each different stone - producing unique, perfectly proportioned flawless sapphires every time.
Commercial cut sapphires, also known as ‘native cut’, are used to mass produce a finished product at a minimal cost, often cut to yield the biggest stone disregarding the quality of the stone and the potential it could have - resulting in inclusions, windowing, poor polish and incorrect facet meeting points. All of the above can affect the brilliance and overall quality of the sapphire. Alot of these sapphires have been cut overseas such as Thailand where commercial cutting is a huge market. The current sapphire market is flooded with commercial cut sapphires in the larger 1-3ct sizes which is concerning as the everyday purchaser is left uneducated and with a lesser grade sapphire then suggested.
Australian Central Queensland Sapphires are unique and one of a kind and should be treated as such. The cut and polish should be a crucial factor when investing in Australian Sapphires. If you have any questions about Precision cutting you can email sales@thehouseoffacets.com.au
